Welcome, colleagues & footballers — to the first-ever company Sweepstake. It's free to enter, gloriously low-effort, and the bragging rights are company-wide. Here's the deal.
Two teams each
All 48 World Cup teams are ranked by their FIFA World Ranking and split into two bands — upper (the top 24) and lower (the bottom 24). Every player is randomly drawn one team from each band: a genuine contender and a plucky underdog.
The draw is blind & reproducible
The shuffle is seeded by the tournament's kick-off date in DDMMYYYY format — 11062026. No thumbs on the scale: the same seed produces the same draw, every single time.
Two ways to win
Glory goes to whoever holds the winning team, and to whoever holds the best-performing lower-band team — so you're never truly out of it, even clutching a minnow.
Two prizes, awarded to the players holding (a) the winning World Cup team, and (b) the best-performing team from the lower band (FIFA rank 25–48).
Prizes will be highly personalised to the winner(s); their precise nature is revealed late in the tournament. 😏
Primary metric — furthest stage reached:
Finishing 3rd can still reach the Round of 32 — the 8 best 3rd-placed teams advance, decided by FIFA's official 3rd-place ranking.
If two teams exit at the same stage, the tie is broken in order:
- Goal difference (all matches)
- Goals scored (all matches)
- Head-to-head — only if they actually met
- Disciplinary / fair-play points
- Drawing of lots by the committee
Knockout games settled on penalties count as a draw for goal difference & goals; the team that advances is still credited with reaching the next round.
